The Grey Wall

The Grey Wall

The Far Lantern, a small three-masted ship with a bow lantern, sailing into a towering wall of fog

Where Far off the western coast of Meridia, about three weeks west of the Tide Cities
What A permanent wall of fog
Opens Only in the Calm
Meridians call it The end of the world

Locked A mysterious wall of fog far off Meridia's western coast. To Meridians it is the end of the world, because no one who sails into it comes back.

What it is like

Locked A permanent belt of fog, contrary winds and spinning compasses. Ships that enter it turn back, or vanish. Driftwood, glass floats and the odd brass oddment sometimes wash up on Tide beaches, and nobody can say who made them.

The Calm

Locked Every few years the Wall thins for a season, called the Calm. Old Tide charts try to mark these years. The Far Lantern is the only ship that has ever crossed it both ways. Captain Marrin knows a dangerous way through outside the Calm: that is how Alyssa came home in spring 909 AP, and it makes her return a feat in itself (R-025).

What each side believes

Who Belief
Meridians The end of the world. Beyond it there's nothing, or only the legend of Hesperra, "the Evening Land"
Farrowans That beyond it lies the old earth their ancestors fled, a ruin no longer fit to live in. Their drifter tales call it the Dawnlands, where the sun rises

A real-world comparison

Medieval sailors spoke of a "Sea of Darkness" past the Canary Islands, where ships went in and never came out. The Grey Wall is that legend made real, and it works both ways: each side thinks the other is the edge of the map.
