Margery, Duchess of Thessaly

Margery, Duchess of Thessaly

Margery, Duchess of Thessaly, a sharp-eyed old woman in grey wool and fur at a desk of ledgers

House House Thessaly
Age About 70 in Campaign One
Force About 2,000 levies
Status Fate unknown

Locked The iron Duchess of the northern plains, loyal to the crown by arithmetic, not sentiment.

Character

Patient, practical and very hard to fool. She has outlived three kings' worth of courtiers and trusts arithmetic over sentiment. She saw straight through Trevor's stumbling act: "you're not stupid."

History

Grandmaster Vane once let her know he had studied her grandson's life in detail, and she has despised him since. Her fear was cheap Kaelen grain through an open Hollowpass, or Church tithes that would ruin her. Her price for alliance was that the pass held. When the war began, she was marching 1,000 men to Hollowpass.

Now

Locked After the Kaelen conquest, Margery was forced to sign a treaty supplying grain to the Kaelen army. She hates it, and she does it anyway, to survive. She is not pro-Kaelen. She is a realist, not a martyr: a dead duchess feeds no one, and a living one can still count, wait and remember. Her province is held for the Lotus by the Anvil.

A real-world comparison

Think of the regional governors of occupied countries in the Second World War who kept the trains and harvests running, hated every order, and quietly kept lists. History judges them case by case, and so will the resistance.

DM only

Kaelen's army eats Thessaly's wheat. If the Red Ribbon ever needs to starve a garrison, the woman who signs the grain treaty is the one to talk to, and she knows it.
