Oren

Oren

Oren, a dry, thin clerk with ink-stained fingers writing in a ledger by candlelight

Role Ledger-man; now keeper of the kingdom's ledgers
Former master Grandmaster Vane
Loyalty Tristen, by the coin and his own code
Died At the siege of Hollowpass, 907–908 AP
Status Dead

Locked Grandmaster Vane's personal Ledger-man, who defected. Dry, procedural, and loyal by a code.

The coin

Oren deduced Ghost-9's identity from the coin ritual, and never says the name. He called "Dragon", won the toss, and was collared (R-033). From then on he fed Vane whatever Tristen scripted, while Vane thought him loyal.

After

He kept two ledgers: the kingdom's, and a private book watching the Empire. He was the first to read the gathering storm in the East.

Death

Locked Oren died at the siege of Hollowpass, during Kaelen's conquest of Aldoria (907–908 AP). He burned the ledger so Kaelen could never read it, and was the last one standing when the fortress fell. The Ledger-man who once counted for the Lotus ended by making sure nothing was left for it to count.

A real-world comparison

Embassies under siege have long done the same: before a city falls, the staff burn the codebooks and files. The building can be taken, but what it knew can't.
