Vesper

Vesper

Vesper, a lean spymaster with a dark jade ring, before a wall of pinned notes

Role Spymaster; once "acting Ghost-Zero"
Alias "Jacopo"
Holds The Ring of Ghost-Zero
Base A cellar under ruined Solis
Loyalty Tristen
Status Alive

Locked Spymaster of the Crown, wearer of the Ring of Ghost-Zero, and the person who pulled Tristen out of the river. Her loyalty to him is absolute.

Before the river

Locked Vesper was a young river smuggler, one of the runners who worked the drains and canal tunnels under Solis for a smuggling boss who treated runners as cargo: cheap, replaceable, and sold off when they cost more than they earned. She was good at it, and she knew exactly how much she was worth to him. Nothing.

The river

When the fire took the safe-house, Ghost-9 swallowed a pulse-stopping herb and crawled into the drains, and the river carried him out. Vesper pulled him from the water before he drowned, and nursed him back over the following months. She is the only person who knew him before "Trevor", and their bond is the deepest he has.

Locked Over the six months he lay hidden in her care, the debt ran both ways. She kept him alive and told no one. In return, the first person the dead Ghost-9 killed in Aldoria was her boss, quietly, so she would never be sold. Then he taught her what the Lotus had taught him: cant, ciphers, dead drops, how to read a room and how to vanish from one. "Jacopo" and the shadow network grew out of those lessons. She was his first student, and the only one he ever chose.

The ring

Locked At Blackwater, in summer 902 AP, after Kira's death, Tristen gave Vesper the Ring of Ghost-Zero. It was the moment he officially made her his right hand in the underground: the head of his own Syndicate.

The ring is a symbol, and an insult to the Kaelen Empire. The Lotus's highest seat now sits on the hand of an Aldorian river spymaster, serving the man the Lotus burned. See the history of the Numbers.

A real-world comparison

Think of a captured enemy standard hung in your own hall. It is worth nothing as cloth, and everything as a message.

The three

Locked Tristen, Vesper and Crow are the tightest bond in the wiki. Vesper and Crow would die for Tristen, and each of them knows the other would too.

Locked What holds them together is that all three were thrown away. The Lotus burned Nine. Vesper's boss would have sold her. Crow was silenced and dumped by the same Syndicate that made him. None of them has family, a country that wants them, or a name they were born with. They have each other, and the work.

A real-world comparison

Think of a wartime resistance cell: three people who trust each other with their lives because nobody else would have them, and who know that if one of them is taken, the other two will come.

DM only

The Lotus teaches that affection is a "soft place" an enemy will find and write down. Vesper and Crow are exactly that for Tristen. Now that the Imperial Council knows who he is, the fastest way to the King-Consort runs through a cellar under Solis.

Campaign One

Vesper ran the Vesper's network in Solis under the alias "Jacopo". She held the Ring, the gold and the evidence vault, ran the fortnightly cure to the King, relayed Oren's scripted reports to Grandmaster Vane, and warned Lyra through the wine-runner. She planted Crow in Trevor's household.

Now

In a cellar under ruined Solis, with a wall of more than 200 pinned reports, she runs what's left of Aldoria's underworld. Crow is with her. Her canal tunnels shelter Aldorian refugees, and two of Alyssa's Farrowan friends: Dr. Okoro and Professor Osric Penhallow. She does not know about Edric Morrow's secret Lantern Road line.
