Archon Solaris

Archon Solaris, a heavy-set old churchman in rich white-and-gold robes with a thin smile

Office Archon of the The Order of the Sun
Council Presided while the King was ill
Killed by Tristen, in his cell
Status Dead

Locked The corrupt head of the Order of the Sun, poisoner of his King, and one of the three men who burned Ghost-9. He loved money, and he meant to sell the Marches to Kaelen for it.

The scheme

Solaris conspired with Emperor Malakor and Grandmaster Vane. He poisoned King Aldor IV with Pale Lotus root and, with Vane, signed a secret accord: the Marches ceded to Kaelen, the Sunstone trade opened, and Solaris made Regent when the King died. To protect it, they burned Ghost-9.

Campaign One: the long unravelling

Locked Every scheme Solaris tried in Campaign One ran into the same rising hero, Lord Trevor Phillips. He never learned who Trevor really was.

Step Solaris's plan How Trevor broke it
1. Oakhaven With Vane, Kira and Gorath, steal Oakhaven's Sunstone and stir turmoil in the Marches, so they could be annexed to Kaelen Trevor broke the ambush, destroyed the bandits at Cragmaw Hollow and turned Solaris's inquisitor Valerius. See The road to Oakhaven
2. Greyrock Through his underling Brother Cobb, divert the food meant for Hollowpass to Sarith's Kaelen camp. Starving soldiers would make Captain Dorne, who stood firmly against Kaelen influence, look incompetent and get him removed Trevor and his crew found Cobb's stash and turned him over to the court in Solis. Trevor then befriended Captain Sarith and made his men Aldorian forces
3. The Lord Protector Trevor slowly won over the great houses, until Solaris was forced to appoint him Lord Protector of the Marches himself
4. A priest to "pray" for him Send Father Hollis, an honest churchman doing dirty work, to spy on Trevor Trevor turned Hollis
5. The poisoned King Keep King Aldor IV dying slowly on Vane's Pale Lotus root Trevor secretly passed the antidote to Vaelen and Lyra. Solaris didn't know until the last moment
6. The princess's hand Betroth Cassian Corvane, the Corvane heir, to Lyra. Cassian was a gambler deep in debt to the Kaelen embassy, meaning Vane, so he'd be their puppet Trevor uncovered Corvane's Kaelen connection. Then the secretly healed King signed a betrothal between Trevor and Lyra
7. The physicians Bribe the royal physicians to swear the King was of unsound mind and the betrothal illegal Trevor persuaded some of the physicians back to honesty
8. The last throw Denounce Trevor as a Kaelen spy, working with Sarith In open court King Aldor IV appeared alive and well, and Cobb's ledger and everything else came out. This was "the one morning"

A real-world comparison

Think of Cardinal Wolsey or Richelieu, a churchman running a kingdom from behind a sick throne, but without the patriotism. Each move Solaris made was sensible on its own. Together they made a trail that one patient man could follow all the way back to him.

Power

During the King's illness Solaris took the Council's lead seat and commanded the Church seats, Corvane, the Treasurer and the Chancellor. Through the Order's charter he held the Sun-Guards and the City Watch: some 2,200 armed men in the capital.

Fall

He armed a loyal fool and came to fear him, without ever learning whose teeth the fool had. On "the one morning", the cured King exposed the conspiracy in open court. Solaris was stripped of his office and imprisoned, and he died in prison. In truth, Tristen killed him quietly in his cell.
