Ledgers and papers

Locked In Meridia, paper has toppled more people than swords. These are the documents that changed the story: who wrote them, who held them, and what became of them.

A real-world comparison

Think of the Zimmermann Telegram, or a mob accountant's books. Nobody died from the paper itself, but once the right person read it aloud, nothing could be the same again.

Document Held by Fate
The secret accord Solaris, Vane and House Corvane Exposed on "the one morning"; now public history
The Greyrock ledger Dun, then Lord Trevor Brought down Brother Cobb
Kira's bribe ledger Kira, then Lord Trevor Used to blackmail Finch
Oren's ledgers Oren Burned at the siege of Hollowpass
Four's sealed confession Four Read aloud to the Imperial Council

The secret accord

Locked The real terms behind the killing of the Trade Prince, Lucan Morrow, in spring 900 AP: the Marches ceded to Kaelen, the Sunstone trade opened to the Empire, and Archon Solaris made Regent when the King died. Archon Solaris and Grandmaster Vane signed it, with Malakor behind Vane.

Three sealed copies existed:

  1. Solaris held one.
  2. Vane held one.
  3. The third was lodged in the Corvane vault as surety. Ambrose Corvane held it unread, as his house holds every document great men want kept safe.

To protect it, the three of them burned Ghost-9. On "the one morning" the cured King exposed the whole conspiracy in open court, the sealed accord included, and it has been public history since.

The Greyrock ledger

Locked For two years Dun, Brother Cobb's clerk, wrote the true ledger of the supply theft at Greyrock: the Hollowpass garrison's food, diverted to Captain Sarith's hidden camp above the pass. When Lord Trevor's people took Dun off the road, he traded the book and his testimony for his life. It brought Cobb to open court, where he confessed.

Kira's bribe ledger

Locked Kira's record of the people she had bought in Aldoria. After her death it came to Lord Trevor, who used it to blackmail Finch, and through him won a port, ships and a southern supply line.

Oren's ledgers

Locked Oren, once Grandmaster Vane's personal Ledger-man, kept two ledgers: the kingdom's, and a private book watching the Empire. At the siege of Hollowpass, during the conquest (907–908 AP), he burned the ledger so Kaelen could never read it, and was the last one standing when the fortress fell.

A real-world comparison

Embassies under siege have long done the same: before a city falls, the staff burn the codebooks and files.

Four's sealed confession

Locked Four, "the Listener" believed the King-Consort was Nine and kept it to himself as leverage for two years. His sealed confession of it was read aloud to the Imperial Council in the Hall of Lanterns, against his will, the morning after Malakor's death. Rhazen had it read. Since then the Council knows that the King-Consort is the Ninth, and Four has been confined to his rooms.
