Crow

Crow

Crow, a lean Kaelen locksmith signing with one hand and holding lock picks in the other

Role Locksmith, shadow, valet
Origin Kaelen
Speech Mute; communicates in sign
Loyalty Tristen
Status Alive, with Vesper

Locked A mute Kaelen master locksmith, and Tristen's silent right hand. He does the quiet work and never speaks a word of it.

Before Tristen

Locked Crow was made by the Lotus, but never numbered. As a boy in the Empire he showed a gift for locks, and the Syndicate took him as an unnumbered tool: the hands that opened doors for the Numbers. He learned the Lotus hand-signs alongside the locks. When a job went wrong and he became a witness, the Ledger-men did what they do with loose ends who are still useful elsewhere: they took his tongue and sold him west, to the Solis underworld.

He spent years in the canal tunnels picking locks for whoever paid, with no one who could understand him.

Meeting Tristen

Locked Vesper brought the silent locksmith to Tristen. Crow signed something rude in Lotus hand-cant, assuming no one would understand. Tristen signed back. It was the first conversation Crow had had in years.

Tristen gave him the name Crow, the way Kira once gave Nine a name: something to be called that no master had chosen. Crow has never wanted another.

History

Vesper planted Crow inside Lord Trevor's household as his valet. Locks, graves, the knife at the throat: Crow did all of it, and never said a word. He took Dun off the road unharmed. He is one of three living people who knew Tristen's true nature before the conquest.

The three

Locked Crow is bound to Tristen and Vesper as tightly as they are to each other, and he would die for Tristen without a sign of complaint. He is Tristen's hands. Vesper is his eyes. See Vesper.

Now

In the cellar under ruined Solis with Vesper.
