The Citadel¶

The Citadel

The Hall of Lanterns, a vast domed hall hung with hundreds of lit lanterns above council seats

City	Serahn
Halls	The Hall of Lanterns; the Hall of the Ninth Door
Seat of	The Throne and the Jade Lotus

Locked The fortress-palace at the heart of Serahn: nine gates, each deeper and more private than the last, and the halls where an Emperor died.

The nine gates¶

Visitors pass gate by gate toward the throne. Weapons are held at the gates: the Edge reclaimed Alyssa's father's sword from the seventh gate's custody with its red-jade token, and stopped at the eighth ("This is as far as I go").

The Hall of the Ninth Door¶

The throne room, raised in the Lotus that raised Ninth. Here Alyssa Kruger shot Emperor Malakor dead on his throne in late summer 909 AP.

The Hall of Lanterns¶

Here, the next morning, Four, "the Listener"'s confession was read to the Imperial Council, and Alyssa fought, fell, and died a little after the seventh bell.

Now¶

Four, "the Listener" is confined to his rooms here. Eleven, "the Moth" haunts its rooftops and chalks "Anybody could" on its walls.
