The calendar¶
Locked Aldoria and Kaelen share one calendar, counted from the Peace of Selorin: the treaty that ended the age of the first Empire and began the Two-State Era. The dates below are settled by R-024.
How years are written¶
| Notation | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| AP, After the Peace | Years since the treaty | Malakor died in 909 AP |
| BP, Before the Peace | Years before it, counted backwards | Aldoria was founded in 58 BP |
There is no year zero: 1 BP is followed directly by 1 AP.
A real-world comparison
It works like BC and AD, but the pivot is a treaty, not a birth. The real world has something similar: in early modern Europe, merchants and diplomats dated contracts from treaties and coronations, because a date both sides recognize settles arguments. Meridia's merchants did the same thing, and it stuck.
Why the Peace? Both crowns signed it, so neither side owns it, the same way the merchants' word Meridia belongs to no one. The Tide City banks and caravan houses needed a single calendar for contracts between Aldoria and Kaelen, and they spread it. Today courts, temples and farmers on both sides use it.
Draft Each realm also keeps an older, prouder count for ceremony: Aldorian chroniclers date from the founding of the kingdom, and Kaelen scribes by the years of each Emperor's reign. Official documents give both.
Seasons¶
The year has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Recent events are dated by season, for example autumn 909 AP. Older history is dated by year only.
Draft The year begins in spring, the season the Peace was signed.
Open Month names, holy days and festivals. Known so far: Midwinter, kept at court in Solis, and Kaelen's autumn festival, when lanterns are set on the river.
The present¶
Autumn 909 AP: about six weeks after Emperor Malakor's death, when Campaign Three begins.
